It is December, and things are changing. The only thing that remains is the fact that work has to get done. Unfortunately this means working in the frigid winter air. Today's mission was pouring concrete.
I have been around people pouring concrete my whole life, but I have never truly observed it. It was early in the morning (especially for me) and Dad wanted me there to document the guys working. He woke me up, I got ready, grabbed my carharrt, and we were off. When I arrived the men were in the middle of their morning routine of drinking coffee and mingling.
I was shocked at how cold it was that morning. I believe it was around twenty five degrees. It didn't slow them down a bit. One of the guys saw I was lacking gloves. He told me I needed some and walked briskly towards his truck. When Wayne came back he had cut out holes for my fingertips to be exposed. That way I could properly maneuver my camera buttons. I am so thankful he did that too! My little hands would have been blue by the end of the day!
Half an hour later the first big, blue, concrete truck had arrived. Everyone lined up, and got into positions for the pour to start. It was so spectacular to watch! The way the light hit the steam coming off the concrete was beautiful. It set the tone for the rest of the day. Spirits were high despite the cold. Amidst my sleepiness, I remember thinking how beautiful the lighting was. It was a much needed morning boost!
Everyone was united to get the job done. I believe watching the sun come up that morning helped things move along. After the three trucks came and went for the day, they smoothed it out and cleaned up the edges.
It was actually relaxing to watch them take their time with it. As they waited for it to dry in between steps, they shared stories of hunting and their plans for the weekend. Now you know me, I watched them work all day and decided to jump in. I love learning new things and asked them to teach me. With eagerness I grabbed the tool and went at it! They let me edge the concrete as long as I had a supervisor! P.S. I am the one with the pink hat. I hope this was a nice read for you all! It was a fun experience for this photographer. This week I will be out shooting, and gathering more images for my weekly blog. Enjoy your week, and stay warm on those cold winter mornings!
