2017: The Year of Thanksgiving

Hello and thank you for stopping by!

Today's blog is the start of a new series I plan on incorporating into my routine during the year. It has a little backstory and needs an explanation before I start, so bear with me if there aren't as many photos as usual. That will change, and I'll keep this explanation short, sweet, and to the point! :)

This story begins last year in 2016. During that course of time, my mind kept playing with the idea of a blog series. Day in and day out, I was constantly thinking of ideas to write about. The problem I kept running into, was thinking of an idea that could be sustained throughout a year. It needed to be consistent and focused, but also creative and enjoyable to create. I came up with several notions, but they lacked a common point. The concept needed enough flexibility to fit into my routine that month, making it achievable. I wanted to treat the idea like a guideline instead of an absolute rule. I kept chewing this over in my mind, and nothing seemed to be able to reach those standards.

One afternoon, I was traveling back home listening to a podcast my pastor had recorded the previous Sunday. It was around Thanksgiving, and in his sermon he mentioned being thankful. He went on to say that we should continue the phrase and make it "I am thankful to God for. . . " followed up by mentioning all of the little things we look over. I have heard this many times in my life, but this time it grabbed my attention. Immediately my mind started thinking of ways to show this statement in the form of photography. Then that little lightbulb moment happened, and I had my idea for a blog series; using photography to show my thankfulness to God for the ordinary things he has given me. Just as I was starting to put the idea of a blog series behind me, I found my idea over the course of ten minutes of my pastor preaching. It's funny how things work out, isn't it?

Lastly, I want to explain why I want to create a series. 2016 was a rough year for everyone in some way. I would turn on the news and somewhere in the world a catastrophe would have happened. Facebook was full of negative articles, people were rioting, and it seemed that the world was losing focus on what really matters. With my small voice and tiny place on the internet, I want to redirect our attention from all the doom and gloom in the world, to something greater than ourselves, Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:6 "For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ."

I hope the act of thanking God for something He has given me, encourages you, and together we can share the light God has given to us in this dark world. This is an exercise I want to do for myself to keep my mind on the goodness of God, and focus on what He has done in my life.

Now that I have talked your ear off, you might be thinking, so what's the name of this series? Well, I've thought about that too! Originally, I was going to go with "Thankful for 2017" or "Being Thankful in 2017" (that's a rough edit but you get the idea), but as I dug a little deeper I found the word Thanksgiving. When I saw that, the first thing I thought of was the holiday, but then I read the definition.

thanks·giv·ing- the expression of gratitude, especially to God.

That is spot on! I want to use my photography as an expression and show what I am thankful for!  So, the goal I have set for myself is to write a monthly blog. I'm going to try my best, and highlight life's daily blessings I tend to overlook. I hope you will join me, and together we can make 2017: The Year of Thanksgiving!
